Don’t you just love computers?
December 20, 2007
I am usually online at some time of the day, often for hours, but in the last few days that has not been the case. In true, ‘no me lo puedo creer’ tradition, with loads of work to do on the net, and also hoping I would be able to send messages and emails and ecards to my family over the Christmas period ….. our computer (now our only computer) decided to play up - big time!
From a line speed that has never been fast (I just love Spain’s ‘Rural ADSL’ ….), everything slowed down to a crawl …. and at times stopped altogether.
(We hope things don’t come to this….)
We have a ‘malware infection’ which we have been unable to cure. We first had quite major ‘problems’ back in September, but with the help of online computer forums we managed to fix most of it …. or so we thought …. Our ‘Hijack This’ logs revealed another story - a nasty that refused to shift and was slowing our whole system down.
Luckily, a really helpful guy on one of the Spain Forums recommended a website we hadn’t tried, full of well-trained ‘malware uninstallers’. They are helping us now.
We now have enough line speed for me to be able to post this entry, but things are still very slow and the process of ‘debugging’ will probably continue for another 2 or 3 days at least. The main problem is that this particular help site is so good it is constantly busy with people like us pleading for help, so the helpers monitor several posts at the same time. Great guys though ……. and so far so good …..
(We are thinking of putting one of these on our system to prevent further infection)
So if any of my family in the UK is reading this, please accept our apologies for not staying in touch, but you never know, we may be able to speak to you on the pc over Christmas …. but there again, this is us and ‘no me lo puedo creer’ we are talking about ….
We’ll keep our fingers crossed.
In the meantime, Felices fiestas, tienes una buena Navidad y mucha suerte el nuevo ano!

Oh I can see how you would want to make your computer into a grill
Good luck with the condom connection though…I think it will filter too much tough
As far as the spyware goes, hijack this and spyboy search and destroy are great utilities to get rid of 80% of your problems…the other 20% you are not as fortunate though.
Good luck with your computer problems!

So far we have tried some pretty radical ‘fixes’, with the help of http://www.malwareremoval.com/ but it’s stil early days …

Spybot S&D is a super little program and free. I run it regularly and it gets rid of an amazing amount of spyware and adware you don’t realise is infecting your system.
Still, like the condom idea

Thanks Heath. We run SpybotS&D, plus several others to get rid of ‘bugs’ which Spybot just can’t touch, and the problems were still there. In the end we posted a plea for help on the SpainExpat forum and someone came up with a link to the malwareremoval forum.
and the guy is still working on solving that problem for us now.
The guy there helped us so much it was unbelieveable, real dedication! We are (touch wood) bug free now, and our internet speed is more or less back to its normal ‘chug along’ but the system load is still messed up (damaged, we think, by the ‘bug’
But at least I can get online properly now (touch wood again!) - so much to do!
